From Aaron Doan (unpublished)
Gaol 17th April 1787
Great Sir

The exalted goodness of your Excellency’s Character, emboldend me most humbly to hope you will condescend favorably to receive the enclosed Petition; and that you will compassionate my long sufferings, and distress, by granting me relief.

The vindictive spirit that unhappily prevailed, at the time the Offence is said to be committed, for which I suffer; has now happily subsided; Whig, and Tory, go hand in hand together, not a word of Animosity is heard; even those who called themselves my greatest Enemies in Bucks County, have declared, they would be happy to see me at liberty; that I have suffered long enough.

Let me hope my good behaviour, during my Confinement, will be no small inducement with your Excellency, to grant me relief; this unhappy place has been repeopled, over and over again since my long confinement: frequent Riots, and disturbances have happened, as well as breakings out; with infinite pleasure I declare, I never had the least concern whatever, in any of them, as Mr. Reynolds can testify.

With all humility and respect, I lay myself at your Excellency’s feet; and humbly crave your pity; which will ever claim my prayers. Your most distressed and devoted humble Servant

Aaron Doan
