From John Jay (unpublished)
New York 17 May 1786
Dear Sir

Mr. Whital this morning gave me your Letter of the 15 Inst: The apparent Reasonableness of his Request, together with the Pleasure it will always give me to attend to your Recommendation and wishes, will ensure him my best officers on this occasion. I shall immediately lay his Case before Mr. Gardoqui, and am persuaded he will readily comply, unless restrained by his Instructions; which may be the Case, as his Nation are sollicitous to prevent every Kind of Intercourse between their american Dominions and Foreigners.

Accept my thanks for the Portraits of Mr. Hartley, which you was so obliging as to send me. They resemble him greatly. Mrs. Jay and my little Famely are well—she assures you of her affectionate Regard; and we join in wishing for the Pleasure of seeing you here. With great Esteem and Regard I am Dear Sir your obliged and obedient Servant

John Jay
