Philada. Goal 24th Octr. 1785

The Petition of Thomas Reynolds Most Humbly Sheweth

that your Excellencys unfortunate petitioner has been Confin’d in the Goal of this City for these Seven Months past and upwards on suspision of A very trifling Offence, and as never received A Trial. Your unfortunate Peititioner Induced by the many Acts of your Excellency’s Generosity when he had the Honour of Serving on Board the ship Reprisal which Carry’d Your Excellency and Grandson to France when we put you on shore between St. Lucia and the Isle of Belisle, when proceeding from thence on a cruise we took may prizes and Carry’d into Port Lourion, whilst the Capt. was with your Excellency at Paris A Dispute arose on Board the ship (which was sunk in Lourion, Repairing) about the prize Money, after which we saild on another Cruise in the North Channel where we took three prizes and Burnt four, the Capts. of the Vessels in Company where Captn. Nicholson &c. Your Excellency’s petitioner was put prize Master on Board of A Bark Bound from Whitehaven to Dublin and was taken by the swallow privateer out of London and Carry’d into Falmouth the there Remaind for ten Days from thence was Remov’d to Plymouth and Committed to Mill prison for High Treason there Remaind for Twenty Two Months untill we had an Exchange from your Excellency at Saint Maloes where we where taken to from Mill Prison. Your Petitioner Traveld from St. Maloes to Lourion thinking to find Some relief in his low Distress, and apply’d to Mr. Myling (An American Agent) but he would not relieve me but procurd A passage which I workd for home on Board the ship Louizan, when I Cam home I applyd to the Navy Office for what was Due to me and Mr. Read told me He Could not settle with me Mr. Harris who was first Lieutt. on Board the ship reprisal was present at the same time and he told me he Could not settle with me untill that he received the returns from your Excellency although my Name was on the Books from the first fitting out of the ship. Your Petitioner now lies Confined in A Horrid Goal Forsaken by his friends on Account of the Infamy of what is Alledgd against him and yet there can be no proof and he lies Confin’d out of Enmity but Expects his freedom the next County Sessions. Your petitioner would not have presumd to Write to your Excellency was it not for the    and Miserable situation he is in He therefore humbly Implores your Excellency to Grant him an Order to Receive the Ballance Due to him for his long and faithfull Servise Your Excellencys Kind and Condecending Answer per Bearer Shall be Ever Acknowledgd with Gratitude And as in Duty bound Your Petitioner will Ever pray
