Robert Morris to William Temple Franklin (unpublished)
Philadelphia October 30th. 1784.
Sir

Upon the receipt of your letter of the 27 Decemr. last I transmitted the same to the Comptroller of the Treasury of the United States who presides over the Settlement of all Accounts and Certifies to the Superintendant of Finance the Balances due, in order that he may pass his Warrant for Payment. By some means or other your claim lay Dormant in his Office untill very lately when I received a Certificate that the Sum of four thousand four hundred and forty four Dollars forty ninetieths of a Dollar was due to you in consequence of which I granted my Warrant for that Sum on the Treasurer from whom I Received the same in Virtue of the Authority contained in your said letter and judged it would be best for Mr. Bache to take out the Shares of Bank Stock in his own Name untill you could execute and send over a Power of Attorney to him or some other Person to Act for you. I sent for and desired him to take out eleven Shares in his own Name giving me a Declaration that they are for your Account and that he will transfer the same in the Bank to your Name & Account so soon as he shall receive your Orders to that effect in the mean while by having them in his Name he can receive the Dividends and Emit the same to you which if they had been taken out in yours he could not have done without a Power of Attorney in the Form which he will Transmit being duely executed and produced to the Director He will remit you the Balance of this Money and I hope the Transaction will meet your approbation. So far from taking amiss your application to me on this Subject I am happy in the Opportunity of complying with your desire.—

I pray my sincere respects may be presented to your Grand Father, few Men Esteem him more than I do.— I am Sir Your most obedient & humble Servant

Robt. Morris
