From John Whitehurst (unpublished)
London Febr. 1787
Sir

I take the earliest opportunity of returning my grateful acknowledgments for the great honour which the learned Philosophical Society of Philadelphia have been pleased to confer upon me, by chusing me a member thereof.

I shall at all time be extreemly happy in contributing anything in my power in support of so laudable an Institution, but am afraid the best of my endeavours will avail little. However as some testimony of my good intentions, I beg the favour of the Society to accept a copy of my Inquiry, Sent herewith, Which I hope will be soon followed by a Copy of my Next work viz An attempt to obtain invariable Measures from the Mensuration of time &c. This work is now in the press and I hope will soon be forwarded.

With the above Doct Hatton Sends a Coppy for the Society which he hopes may be acceptable. I am Sir with great esteem and regard Your Most Obedient Servant

John Whitehurst
