John Vaughan to William Temple Franklin (unpublished)
Bordeaux 7 April 1781
My dear friend

The great hurry I am in from the final Settlement of Mr Barton’s affairs, & near approach of my departure Scarcely leaves me time to return you the thanks due to your kindness on this occasion. Your favor of 29 Ulto. gave me inexpressible pleasure by relieving me from my fears of having acted improperly; our Self love is flattered by having our conduct approved of by others, & with reason when approved of by persons whose opinion we have a great reverence for. Had yr letter luckily arrived aport Sooner, Should have had the pleasure of going with Col. Livingston who parts this day, as it is I hope to Join him in two or three days at Bayonne, & make the rest of the Journey with him. An Agreeable companion is always desirable, & In Spain is necessary, having nothing else to console for the Badness of accomodations & imperfect mode of travelling in that Country. I Should have been exceedingly happy if I Could have been useful to you in conveying anything to Madrid, You might regard it as a gasconade if I offered you my services there. But rest assured that tho’ you may possess there more experienced friends, you will not find one who is more Zealous to serve You than My dear friend Your affc. friend & much obliged

Jno Vaughan

present my most affectionate & Gratefull Respects to the Doctor
