To William Vaughan (unpublished)
Philada Aug. 18. 1788
Dear Friend

I received your kind Letter of March 21. with the two Boxes therein mentioned in good Order, and think you much for your Care in sending them. I have also since received the other Hygrometer sent by Mr. Nairne to the Philos. Society, whose Secretary will return their thinks.

I have been much afflicted these 8 Months past with both Gout and Stone. I am now better, but still writing in pain, can write but little. You are pleas’d to desire some of my little Papers that apply to common Conduct in Life, for the Use of the lower and middling Classes of People. I have indeed written many of that kind, but have at present only the enclos’d at hand which I can send you.

Enclos’d are Copies of two Letters, one to Mr. John Wright Banker in Lombard Stree, who was of the House Smith, Wright & Gray: the other to Mr. Caslon, Letter Founder, Chiswell Street, to neither of which I have receiv’d any Answer, nor has Mr. Caslon sent me the Types he promis’d to ship in a Fortnight after the 2d of April If those Gentlemen are still living and my Letters have miscarried, and Caslon has omitted sending the Types because the Pay was not ready, I beg you would take the Trouble of showing them these Letters, and of giving Mr. Wright the enclos’d Bill. If he is deceas’d, which I hope he is not, then please to forward the Bill to Mr. Grand, and when you have receiv’d the Money, pay out of it Mr. Caslon’s Demand.

My Love to the good Ladies and to your Brother, from Your affectionate humble Servant

B Franklin

I write in pain, and am too much fatigu’d, or should write also to your Brother.
