From the Baron de Strasser (unpublished)
Simmern near Manheim the 20th of July 1782
Honourable, most Gracious Sir!

Your Exlency will allow me to propagate a relation of my present Circumstances, and at the Same time humbly recommend my now Situation in your Exlency’s grace and favour, and I would not have undertaken the audaciousness, if not the oppinion of your galant character where Known to me, which gave raise to freedom and animosity of performing it:

As I feelt an internal Vocation in my breast since my infancy, so I followed those Calling sentiments of Nature, and entered long before the Commencment of the american war into the famous hessain Service before their aucmentation as Ensign, in the flattering hopes to attain to perfection in the military Knowledgment and to form myself in this profession as an able Soldier, to which my forditude and eccedingly good Constitution of life, and all Necessary and happening Actions encreases every day more to my fondness and pleasure. at least war was declared in America and I was among the twelfe thousand hessains auxiliar troops which entered into British Subsidies and destined to the american Colonies:

It would be unnecessary, and troublesom to the patience of your Exlency if I would relate all our expeditions to see and land the several accidents, and happening Occassions which undoubtely Cannot be unknown to your Grace till our arival in Portsmouth and lately to our place of destination in the Northern parts of America, in this Country I was acquainted with divers prisoners have been witness of a great many skirmishes, Combats, and engagements, till we arived in the Southern departments of South Carolina and Came to Quarters in charles town, there I had the honour of Miss Nancy Eliotd’s aqaintance, descented of an eminent and ancient family of Bernard Elliotd, and I dare say you knew him formerly. I was so fortunate to Strike this beautiful Lady’s fancy and her asurance of helping me in beeing promoted in the Continental Service of the thirteen united States of the Republic, occasioned me to demonstrate the Colonel of the Regiment my design, and insist upon my dismission with an intirely resignation from those Service, and accept Nancy Elliotd’s hand. Several letters which the handsome and lovely Nancy gave me to render them into the hands of Gen: Moultry Lincoln, and Scott, who were upon parole and prisoners of war at hadrals point, after I remained there a few days, vouchaved my Supplication wherewith I departed, the informed me if I would accept their Service, that I would not have the lest difficulties to preferr me as Major of Brigade so soon I had obtained my discharge whose intelligences Caused my absolutely insisting upon it although I obtained them, was Close Confinnt, and after remaining a good while in imprisonment was embarked upon a letter of marke mounting Sixten Guns with the Cruel destination to england and from thence in my Native Country where I arrived a month ago, and am at present.

I’ve now abdicated the Hessain Service intirely, and no more deprived of the Sweet hopes to accept the advantageous match with Miss Nancy Elliotd, and the employment of the American Service, in this pitiful Contition Come to Supplicate Submissivly of your Exelency’s protection with the humbly Petition to Gratify me the Same preferrment as formerly I Stoot in:

Baron de Siking embassador of the Elector of Palatine will inform you of my extraction who is particularly acqainted with my uncle Baron de Ritter likewise minister at Wiene:

Will your Exelency Command and permit to wait upon you and present myself, then shall I have the Grace to pay my respect and accept my fortune from the gracious meanings of you, in whose Consolable hopes have the honour to name myself with the greatest Submission and perfect respect Your Exelency Minister and Embassador humble Obedient devoted Servant
