From Timothy Pickering (unpublished)
Philadelphia Octr. 8. 1786.
Sir,

You will recollect that I waited on you, about a fortnight since, to inform you of my intention to petition Council to appoint me to the office of prothonotary for the county of Luzerne. I presented such a petition the same day. Afterwards, it was proposed to me to apply for the offices of clerk of the Sessions and clerk of the Orphan’s Court, as naturally connected with the former: I did so. No appointments have yet been made. This afternoon I received, from a friend, well-grounded information, that the business was postponed, under plausible pretexts, indeed, but really with a view to introduce another person, when several of the present members, whose authority is just expiring, should have gone home. I was therefore urged to request your Excellency’s attendance in Council to-morrow forenoon, at ten o’clock, that the question may be decided before the members above referred to leave town. For this purpose I will do myself the honour to wait on you in the morning. In the mean time it seemed proper to give you this previous notice. I am most respectfully, Sir, your obedient servant,

Timothy Pickering

His Excellency Benjamin Franklin Esqr. President &c.
