From William Nelson, Jr. (unpublished)
Williamburg July 20th. 1789.
Sir

Early in the late war Mr. John Parradise, who had resided for many years in the City of London, altho’ he was a native of Thessalonica, and had never become a British subject, except as far as he might owe a temporary allegiance, took the oath of fidelity to the United States, before you as Ambassadour from these States at the court of Versailles. His property in this country was saved to him; but there is a suit depending in one of the district-courts of this Commonwealth, in which a question, “whether he be a British-subject” will arise. I take the liberty therefore to request you, as soon as possible, to transmit me, by port, a certificate of his having taken the oath of allegiance to the United States. I beg leave to assure you, that I am, with the highest Respect Sir, your very obedient Servant
