Jonathan Williams, Jr. to William Temple Franklin (unpublished)
Passy Octor. 1784.
my dear Billy

I hope this will meet you in Time to purchase for me a handsome bound Edition of Tristram Shandy, it is to replace 6 Volumes which were lent to me & of which part have been stolen from me. Let them be very neatly but not gaudily bound, the sett lent me were either small octavo or large twelves—I do not know which but they were in 6 Volumes so you can easily find out.—

I have written to you only once because, I supposed your Time better & more agreably employed than it would be in reading my nonsense—I expect soon to see you here with our amiable Friend Mrs. Hewson. As you are a Mesmerite, & it will not increase the postage I send you on the other side an Epigram lately sent to the Doctor—on ne dit plus magnetisé c’est animalisé.

Apres ce Jugement bien sage et bien legal;

Si quelque Esprit original,

Persiste encore dans son delire,

Il sera permis de lui dire;

Crois au magnetisme,—Animal!
