From Burwell Starks (unpublished)
[1777-1785] Gen. Hotel de Tours, Rue du Paön, Paris, Monday Evening
Sir

An English gentleman who has lived many years at Paris, and who makes frequent Visits to England, informed me this Evening that it was necessary to get a Pasport in order to leave France; that he had never quitted Paris without procuring one; that indeed they were seldom demanded at leaving Calais: but if it should happen that the Passport should be asked for, I should infallibly be obliged to wait at Calais ’til I could get one from hence: if this be so, you will much oblige me by addrissing a line to Mr le Lieutenant de Police to beg the favour of him to grant one: I am told that it is a mere matter of course: and indeed I can hardly think it necessary.

I have Sir the honour to be Your most obedient Most humble Servant
