John Ross to William Temple Franklin (unpublished)
Philadelphia 3d October 1781
Dear sir

Soon after receipt of this you may expect very important News from this Country. Our affairs are in a most flattering train.—Cornwallis strongly entrenched, and now besieged at York Town Virginia by a formidable Army of French & American troops under Command of General Washington—The French Fleet in the Bay & River Co-operating with the Army, and so Arranged, that the Enemy can’t take flight or receive Succour—

The English Fleet returned to N York after a very ruffe handling, & from every account, in a Situation unfit to attempt any thing on this Coast but that of proper measures for their Security—

There is a report Currant here, of a very bloody Action in So. Carolina, where Genl. Green maintained a Victory with the Loss of 300 Killed & wounded, & the loss of the English Killed Wounded & prisoners above a thousand. Official accounts are hourly expected, if this shoud prove true, England cannot boast greatly of her possessions in the Southern States— Remember me kindly to Doctor Franklin & believe me sincerely Yr friend &ca.

Jno. Ross
