From Charles Thomson (unpublished)
Octr. 26. 1784
Dear Sir,

Mr. Joseph Norris the second son of your ancient friend Charles Norris will have the honor of waiting on you with this. He has resolved to pursue trade and has for some years applied himself with assiduity to gain a knowledge of it. His visit to Europe is for the purpose of establishing commercial connections. But he is anxious to see Paris and to gain a fuller knowledge of a People to whom his Country owes so many obligations. He reverences your character and is ambitious to have it known that you are the Ancient friend of his family; I am pleased with this disposition and therefore recommend him to your friendly notice. For although I know the value of your time yet I know your benevolence      and what pleasure it will give you, having ascended the steep of live with honor and dignity to point out to the descendents of your old friend, the paths to virtue and honor, especially when they are disposed to pursue them. With great respect I have the honor to be Dear Sir Your affectionate old friend
