I embrac’d the earliest Opportunity of paying that Attention to your recommendatory Letter of the Revd. Mr. Wm. Nixon, and to your private Concerns, that Circumstances would admit, which the inclosed copy of a Letter that I took the Liberty of writing to the Speaker of the House of Assembly of this State, and their subsequent Resolution thereon will serve to elucidate. I also inclose you a Copy of a Warrant (of which there are six) in your favor for five hundred acres of Land each, these I shall put into the Hands of Mr. Montford, Surveyor of Glyn and Camden, two new Counties on the seaboard situate between the Rivers Alatamaha and St. Marys: all the Rice Swamps on the Margin of the Rivers have been survey’d and granted to Gentlemen in South Carolina antecedent to its being annex’d to Georgia, but there are yet large bodies of excellent Land unlocated, of which you will have a Share, but in order to insure it, I have thought it expedient to promise the surveyor, a small Compliment, as the legal Fees of Office will not be an inducement for him to take much pains in Exploring the Country for good Lands; indeed altho’ I was upon the Spot last summer, I experienc’d the Advantage of presenting him with a Quarter Cask of Madeira, another of Spirits and a third of Brandy, for some Warrants located for me; I have made him the same offer in your Behalf, which if it meets with your Approbation, you will please to forward by the first Opportunity, and I will take Care they shall not be deliver’d untill he has faithfully performed this Service: All lawful Charges for surveying and Grants are to be defray’d by the State.
