Arthur Greer to [Benjamin Franklin] (unpublished)
Reading 24th. April 1789
Sir,

After along and close Study I have been so successful as to discover a true System of taking the Longditude or true departure from any given Meridian on the North side of the equator as far as day and night appear every 24 hours and have made and finished a Machine that fully Answers my expectations on [that?]. I will be exceedingly obliged to you to let me know how I am to proceed so that I may have both the Honour of the Invention and be intitled to the Premmums in Europe. I had some thoughts of laying it before Congress first provided it will not be an Injury to me in Europe, which you can inform me of. I would have waited on you in Person but am much Indisposed and as soon as my health will permit, I will come to Philada. and make you acquainted with the Principles of the System and manner of working this Machine which is accomplication of mathemmatical Machinery. You will direct to me in Reading, which will be acknowlegd as a particular favor by Sir your most Obedient and Very Humble Servant
