Society for Free Inquiry Prize Question
A New and Very Important Doctrine, having been advanced
in Mr. Young’s Essay on the Powers and Mechanism of
Nature, viz.

That the first Elementary Materials, of which the visible World is composed, existed, or were created, in a State of Motion and Activity; that therefore, Motion is coexistent with Matter and essential to it, not an accidental Condition superadded ; that a subtle Fluid essentially active, pervades all Bodies, and is the Agent in all Mechanical Actions ; that the same Fluid fills the Solar System, and is the immediate Cause of Gravitation, and of the Planetary Motions: The Question is founded upon this Doctrine, whether or not it be true?

The best Dissertation, tending either to establish or refute the Arguments employed in Support of the above Theory, will be entitled to the Prize, which will be a Gold Medal, Value Ten Guineas. Answers to the Question, and all Communications for the Society, may be sent to Mr. Johnson, Bookseller, No. 72, St. Paul’s Church-Yard ; the Answers on or before the 1 st of November 1789.
