Jonathan Williams, Jr. to William Temple Franklin (unpublished)
L’Orient Decemb. 20. 1782
my dear Billy.

I have received your Favr of the 11 Inst. & thank you for all your Friendship, in answer to your Question about my Brig I do suppose her outfitts will cost something less than 40,000 Livres, from this will come what she may be estimated at in America & the difference will be what the Public will have to pay when she arrives. She may cost considerably less, but whatever it is I mean the real & not supposed amount to be the Standard. I thank you for your Hint about Barneys safety the Secret is with me, but it began to trot & was soon on a gallop from other Quarters.—Many wise People doubt a general Peace—I think it clear & govern myself accordingly.— I am Yours sincerely & affectionately
