From Jonathan Williams, Sr. (unpublished)
Boston June 12th. 1785
Honoured Sir

I find by your letter to your Sister I did not do what you expected Vizt. advice whether the People of Franklin Town preferd Sound to Sence if so they ought not to Judge for themselves however I, avoided giving them any expectations of a Bell or Book. I knew they had no right to either, it must and Ought depend on your plesure I belive Books will be much more Acceptable for they are poore, and in my Opinion, dont nead a bell any more then a toad Neads a Tail, if they should have a Bell they must have a ringer and that would be a living expence.

The last night your favour of April 13: 1785 Came to hand Inclosing papers and a bill drawn by Mr. Vermon Junr. on his Father for 840 Livres. Your Sister sets out on a Visit to Greenwich tomorrow and Intends to go to Rhod Island I have Indos’d the Bill for 840 Livres on Mr. Vermon, and shee will receive the money (it Comes to 160 dollars) the Bill you Orderd her to draw On you I Sold for 6 per Cent advance. Mr. Hartwells friends will be much Oblig’d for Delivering him out of a misery which they Concive is allmost as bad as Hell and the ideas of all Sectarys are bad enough of Hell. Thayer is a College Spilt Child he might have been a Usefull man if his Parents had attended to his Genus and there abilities, he press’d me for a Letter to you but I, abslutly deni’d him I well new that he would be no Credit to his friends himself or his Countery and prehaps troblesom if not Expencuve.

Capt. Neckerson tells me his Father (76 years old) has Lateley Obtain’d a Wonderful Cure of the Stone by drinking a draft of Cold Water morning and Evening it so affected the Stone as to break it in to pieces. It all Come away and he as well as ever.
