From Joseph McIntosh (unpublished)
London 18th March 1783
Sir

The Supposition that any Attemp to Introduce Arts and Manufactures into the Rising States of America, will meet with every Encouragement that the Politics of the Country will Admit; and the Illustrious Example which Your Excellency has Manifasted to the World of Attention to every thing that might Tend to your Country’s Good; Have given me the Boldness to Address myself to you. Sir and to Hope for your Excellency’s Protection in that Attempt.

The Art or Rather Manufacture Alluded to, is that of Callicoe Printing, and its subservient Arts, such as Design, Engraving &c. Of all those I have acquired a competent Knowlege both in Theory and Practice, having Carried on this Manufacture in this Country, but which has Ceased for a little Time, on Account of the Troubles it has lately Experienced.

To Convince Your Excellency that I am Serious, I beg leave to State the following Facts. Viz. That I still have it in my Power to Resume the Manufacture here, that I shall need no Assistance to Establish it in America but that which shall be derived from Your Excellency’s Protection and that I shall take my Family with me.

Absolute Necessity is not the Motive of this Application, Yet I do not Deny that the Hope of being Able to Provide more Amply for my Family, is an Inducement, especially among a People to whom I have formed an Attachment from Principle, from their Heroic Perseverance in the Cause of Liberty from Their Glorious Establishment of it.

The Jealousy that at Present Subsists, of Manufacturers Emigrating out of this Country, is so Great, that Your Excellency will readily See the Danger of, and great delicacy Required in Applying for Particular Introductions before any Thing Decisive with Regard to this is Concluded. But if this Proposal should be found Worthy your Excellency’s Attention I shall have the Honour of waiting upon, You, Sir, at Paris; upon the first Notice: and shall produce every Necessary Recommendation. I have the Honour to be Sir Your Excellency’s Most Obedient and Most Humble Servant

Jo. McIntosh
