Sirs,

The American Philosophical Society held at Philadelphia, for promoting useful knowledge, were incorporated by an Act of Assembly on the 15th. day of March 1780, and have been pleased to elect you annually their President during your absence in France. There is to be a special meeting of this Society to morrow at six o’clock in the afternoon at the University, where they will be happy by your presence, as they purpose to address you on the occasion. You will receive a copy of the intended Address inclosed herewith. I have the honor to be, with every sentiment of regard, Sir, Your most obedient and most humble servant
