From Peter P. Burdett (unpublished)

Venerable Sir!

Carlsruhe 19 August 1787

Upon a former occation I had the honor of returning you thanks for the Medal struck on account of the American Peace, and which you were pleased to Honor me with by the hands of Baron de Beutre.

I now take the liberty of introducing to your country one who is desirous of becoming a new member and whome I doubt not will recieve such protection and fraternal friendship among the Americans as his personal Merit And amiable character justly deserves.

The bearer is M de Schilling, a Subjet of the Prince I have the honor to serve, and which Prince was once so desirous of shewing his great friendship and high regard towards Dr. Franklin previous to the American revolution.

M de Schilling has spent some years in the Army of the King of Sardinia with credit and reputation to himself, but the slow progress of Promotion in a State at Peace exhausted his patience; he therefore quitted the service with honor and determins to Engage in those more active Scenes of Agriculture or Commerce so naturally to be expected in America; He therefore visits your country Sir, provided with the necessary Capital of Money and Active Spirits for such a purpose, and the meaning of this letter is only to make it known that M de Schilling a Gentleman of Birth, Education and Honor. I am with every consideration of respect Sir, your Most Obliged and very Humble Servant
