To Benjamin Vaughan (unpublished)
Philada. May 14. 1788
Dear Friend,

The Bearer, Mr Rumsey, goes to England, with a View of making some Advantage to himself by an Invention which he thinks may be useful to others, viz an Improvement of Boilers for Steam Engines, whereby ths of the Fuel may be saved; and the Machine applied with Convenience to the forcing Boats against the Stream of Rivers. He apprehends that another Mechanician of this Country is endeavouring to deprive him of such Advantage, by pretending a prior Right to the Invention; and as he will be quite a Stranger in England, and unacquainted with the Modes of Proceeding in such Affairs, I beg leave to recommend him to your friendly Counsells, which will much oblige Yours affectionately

B Franklin

Mr. Rumsey is a Person of good Character and Reputation in this Country.
