Edward Shippen to Benjamin Franklin and the Pennsylvania Supreme Executive Council (unpublished)
Philadelphia, 20th Nov., 1786.

May it please his Excellency the President, and the Honorable the Supreme Executive Council.

Having the Honor of an appointment and Commission from this Honourable Council as President of the Court of Common Pleas for the County of Philadelphia, and being since elected and commissioned as a justice of the peace for the same County, I find by above a years Experience in the latter office, that if executed with the proper Care and Activity, it would greatly interfere with and entrench upon the time necessary for the due Execution of the former more important office; I therefore request this Honorable Council will accept my resignation of the said office of Justice of the Peace, as well as of my Commissions as President of the Courts of Quarter Sessions of the peace for the said City and County. I have the honor to be, with the greatest respect, Your Excellency’s and your Honors most obedient humble Servant,

Edw’d Shippen.

Addressed: To His Excellency, the President and the Honorable the Supreme Executive Council.
