The first medical society in the thirteen united states of America since their Independence sendeth Greetings We having formed ourselves into a medical Society (named as above) for the sole & noble purpose of promoting Physical knowledge & thereby preventing that unhappy Slaughter which is daily made amongst our fellow Citizens, by the barbarous [fiends?] of [medicasters?]; do most earnestly solicit of your society the favour of an epistolary Correspondence, with a view to our own improvement in the Important Science of Medicine; and [our mission of desiring?] health & happiness, through the united States of America: We are the more inclined to expect a complyance with this request on account of the similarity of interests between France and America, since they have joined their Arms we think their Arts might also to be United—our Society is not under the Patronage of any Legislature, but is founded on Spontaneous Compact, or mutual agreement of its Members, and is Governed by Laws of its own fabricating, it consists of a number of Reputable Physicians of the States of Massachusettes, Connecticut & New York, we meet thrice in a year, and after Choosing a President and Secretary, the Convention is opened with an oration, then follows four dissertations on a Physic, after which we proceed to the examination of Candidates, to whom (when found qualified) we give a Licence to Practice; the Gentleman is received into our Society without an examination on Producing a recommendation from at least two Physicians of established character, and any Member of the Society is liable to an examination on a request made for that purpose, by two other Members, the salutary effects of this institution begin already to appear in exciting a Spirit of emulation and diligence as well in young Students we Practitioners of Physic, and we conceive nothing is wanting for the accomplishing our good designs, & Extirscating [conpiruion?], but the aid and protection of Law; which we hope to obtain as Soon as the Public attention can be called off from war. Thus Gentlemen we have given you a sketch of the Constitution of our Society that you may judge whether it is so founded onto merit the Correspondence of a Society Constituted by Letters Patent of his Most Christian Majesty—we expect this will be laid before you by our Minister the Learned Doctor Benjamin Franklin, who we understand is a member of your Society, and to whom we have committed the care of our Correspondance, if you should favour us with a Correspondence it would not only give credit and Importance to our Society; but have a very auspicious influence on the healing Art, throughout the United States of America, we are very Sensible of the Great Disparity between a Royal Medical Society and such a one as ours is, and then we feel our inferiority, yet presume that a Virtuous Princess, will not refuse intercourse with a Sister who is only a Noblemans Spouse—while our Ambassadors, and Plenipotentiaries, are laying before the Parliament of France the Political Situation, interest, and Circumstances of America, we shall with Pleasure (if permitted) transmit to your Society, the Physical, and Phylosophical transactions, of this New World—we conceive that a literary intercourse with your Society, will not only place us on the Seale of Science in such a Conspicuous light as to attract the attention of our Legislators, and all lovers of learning, but likewise Abash & Confound, those illiterate and vain pretenders to Physic, who are the common Pests of Community, After wishing all possible prosperity to the Royal Medical Society of France, we beg leave to close with this Valedictory Protestation that we are with Great truth, and esteem, your most Obedient humble Sister and servant The first Medical Society in the thirteen united States of America Since their Independence. Signed by Order and in behalf of the Society,
