From James K. Tobine (unpublished)
(May it please Your Excellency)

Immediately on Your auspicious Arrival to Your native Country, a certain Person did himself the Honour of waiting on Your Excellency with a new dramatic Work entitled Americania and Seraphina, or, the Immortal Friendship, an allegorical Masque, in order, Sir, to implore Your Excellencys Protection for his Work, And, that You would be pleased, Sir, to permit him to dedicate it to You. You read it and (pleasing Reflection!) did not disapprove.

A long and grievous Fit of Illness shortly after siezed the unhappy Author, and put a Stop to every Effort of his toward the publishing his Work And reaping the little Profits, by the Sale of it, Which he had a natural Right to expect: recoverd however from his Distemper; but alass! not from the Ruin, and Difficulties which are always the inevitable Consequences of Sickness to the Unfortunate however industriously inclined; he once more, begs leave, with the deepest Respect, to Approach Your Excellency, and to entreat, Sir, that You woud condescend to permit Your ever revered, and most respectable Name to be prefixed to a Subscription which he is about to solicit, in order to enable him to print, and publish his Poem.

Good Your Excellency, be pleased to consider how necessary this Step is toward the accomplishing such a Design, and I am almost certain you Will then, Sir, pardon the unavoidable Necessity I am under of troubling You upon this Head, And of taking Leave to subscribe myself Your Excellencys Most devoted most humble and most faithful Servant

James K. Tobine
