From Joachim Heinrich Ludewig (unpublished)
At Butrow in the Duchy of Mehlenburg Sehwerin the 23 of March 1783.
May it please Your Excellence

You remember perhaps that in the Year 1773 in the time You lodged in the Strand not many miles from Mr. Weddeburne a poor German Scholar recommended to You by the late Mr. Achenwall at Gottingen, willing to go to Philadelphia with an intention of Selling books, payed to You his respects and that he afterwards in the time of his E. miserys was relieved very generously by Your humanity. It is therefore with a full acknowledgement of Your good will You have Shewn me at a time I wanted it most, that a Son of freedom congratulates You most Sincerely to the late conclusion of a peace honorable both to You and Your countrie, adding that not yet being married nothwithstanding I Since one Year and a half have got a Small livelihood at this place I still am of the Same opinion, Provided I can go there with Your recommendation, or can be certain of finding a lasting emploiment connected with a proper Salary in the University of Philadelphia in the quality of Professor or Lector of the German and Dutch languages. Likewise might I in the quality of M. of A. give instructions and read lessons in the historical and political Sciences as I have done here already, and in this case I humbly expect to be favoured with a Speedy answer, for the month of May advances, and than I can not go very wel, before the following 1784th. Year. But even if You not Should be pleased to give me Such an emploiment, I recommending myself to Your Benevolence wish You wel, and Shal be always with the greatest respect Your Excellences most humble Servant
