From Robert Aitken (unpublished)
Philada. 17 April 1788
Gentlemen

I am of Opinion that the 2d. Vol. of the American Philosophical Transactions cannot be Sold with any tolerable degree of Success, unless the first Vol. is likewise brought within the power of the purchaser, I mean reprinted.

I have been informed Mr. Dilly of London labours under the same inconvenience, which has induced him to make the following proposal viz.

If the American Philosophical Society will take 150 Copies he will reprint vol. 1st. Or, if you will cause said Volume to be reprinted heere, he will take 150 Copies. As you have it in your power, according to the above proposal, to have the work done in our own Country, and uniform with the 2d. vol

Curry.
I propose to Serve Mr. Dilly with 150 Copies at£112.10s.
I propose, you will take 159 do.112.10s.
Do. you will advance £100
In lieu of said advance I will give the Society 30 Copies22.10s.

I propose to finish the work in 6 months and on delivering your 180 Copies you shall pay the Ballance of your 150 copies. I expect you to furnish the engravings belonging to said volume and that I be permitted to sell the remainder of the impression at the rate of 20s. per volume, as a property of my own.

It is likely, if Mr. Dilly prints the vol., he will charge the
Society 12s. Ster per vol. equal to 20s. currency£150.
Say charges of importation15
£165

The above Articles are presented to the Amer. Phil. Socy. for consideration, if found to be agreeable, I shall prepare myself to begin the work with the outmost expedition, I am Gentlemen Your Most Obedient humble Servant.

Robt. Aitken.
