From Jonathan Williams, Jr. to William Temple Franklin (unpublished)
Nantes Sunday Morg June 3 or 4th 1779
Dear Franklin

Tis all you see, according to the Accidents of the Moment, Accidents govern me, as Yorick says, I cant govern them, tis sufficient if I can always be in readiness— I arrived at Nantes last Night, I have already so well arranged my Affairs, that I set off tomorrow for L’Orient and if nothing New turns up, from there to America, perhaps the next Spring Paris may bring me up again, however you see that your Correspondence, political & domestic is what I wish to enjoy, let me be where I may— there is a Satisfaction in receiving the little Anecdotes of the Adventures of a Friend, that is like a second Enjoyment, you never can want for Subjects copious ones too, as long as the Police or the Guards, are negligent in executing the Laws against the Nymphs of St Honorè &c while they can walk abroad or laugh at a Window to catch your attention without Hazarding the Penalty of loosing their Hair— If I go to America I earnestly request the favour of you to give me now & then the Stories of the Day here, the political only I mean, for in general we are so badly supplied with Information, that you will not only oblige me, but perhaps due some signal Service to your Country, let Ambition then be your Stimula— & dont be in the formal punctillious exactness of a Frenchman or a Precieuse, but write me frequently, a few moments will answer the purpose, by every Opportunity, & you shall always see an attention on my side that shall convince you how much I am interested in your Correspondence— on reading over the above Paragraph I am obliged to beg your Pardon for supposing you can be precise, I am determined not to suppose so, & I am determined too not to be so myself. I have left a Suit of Cloaths by accident & some other things [illegible] believe which I miss will you [illegible] kind as to call at the Hotel & make some enquiry about them— there is a pair of white Breeches too— if you find them take them into your Care & when an opportunity offers send them to Nantes Mr Roch will come soon, I am shure he woud bring them very readyly— I have another Commission for you too & that is to make an apolgy to Dr Bancroft, Mr Wharton & Ross for my leaving them without seeing them— dont be discourged at receiving at first so long a Letter, I do not always write so unmercifully— Charity is one of the principal Virtues of your Friend
