Jonathan Williams, Jr. to William Temple Franklin (unpublished)
Nantes May 18. 1782.
my dear Billy

The more I consider of what I wrote last post about Mr G, the more I am inclined to think the story ill founded. Mr G I know to be so prudent in his Transactions as to have refused in many Instances Business that was hazardous, and my own Idea of him has been that he was (tho’ perhaps not the Richest) yet one of the most solid Bqrs in Paris I will give you my Information verbatim.— “a Friend has confidentialy expressed a kind of Doubt, which he heard when in Nantes (but did not believe) respecting Mr G in Paris—a late Transaction he has had with him induces him to wish a friendly hint was given the Doctor which you are the properest person to do, my Friend as is very natural would not wish his name mentioned.”

What the late Transaction is I do not know, but I know that Mr G has lately made some Enquiries about the solidity of the Informant, & if I had not a better opinion of his heart I should attribute all this to Resentment for being disappointed. I beg you will not forget my Paper & Ink for the Press I have desired Mumford to write to you every Post ’till it arrives, so if you do not make haste you will spend the Worth of it in Postage.

One of the [Hds] of Madeira Wine BF was for Doctor de Bruil & I desired you to send it to St Germain at my Expence. I since hear the Doctor has not recd it which mortifies me much as I announced it to him as a present some time since.

Do answer me also about the [personnes] who are eating & drinking my money every day. I am Your ever affectionate
