To Cherokee Indian Queen (unpublished)

Sister,

Philada. June 30. 1787.

I have seen your Letter to the Congress, and it has impress’d me with great Esteem for you, as it contains strong Marks of your Prudence and Wisdom, and your Love of Peace.

I congratulate you on your having so good a Son. He is a brave and a discreet Man. He has conducted himself well among us, and we respect him. I pray the great Spirit to conduct him safe back to you, and that you may have the Benefit of his Support when you grow old.

Our great Council Fire at New York is not now burning, therefore he could not accomplish his Business if he had gone there: But in a few Months the Coals which are preserv’d under the Ashes will be uncovered, and the great Council Fire again kindled; and you may assure your great beloved Men and Counsellors, that their Complaints will then be taken into Consideration, and that Justice will be done them.

I have treated your Son with the Civilities he merits, and have given him a Medal as a Token of my Regard. I also send by him my Picture in Silver for your self, and wishing you Health and Happiness I remain Your loving Brother
