From Benjamin Putnam (unpublished)
Portsmouth Virga. Apl. 26th. 1782
Honourable Sir

I presume to trouble you once more on the Subject of my Vessels depending in the Admiralty of France: Mr. Ridley having lately forwarded me, from London, a Decree obtained in June, in favor of the Privateer, Terrible, without making any mention of the other, alarms me much, fearing Mr. Ridley has not attended to it. As it was the first, I suppos’d, would have had an hearing.

I concieve the Letters, and Coppies of Letters from Comte d’Estaing and Mr. Wm. Bingham on this Subject, deliver’d [to] Mr. Gerard by Congress, on his Departure for france, will be of the greatest Consequence to my Interest, with the Court. It also contain’d the Estimate of the Vessel, Cargo and 13. slaves. amountg to 1030 half    Should these papers not yet have been produc’d by the Sieur Geraurd, I shall acknowledge a great favor done me, could you find leasure to address the Sieur for them and inform me what Scituation this Vessel stands in; whether any thing has yet been said of her in Court, and with whom, if any Person, Mr. Ridley has left the immediate transaction as he has gone over to London, not to return to france; I can expect nothing further from him concerning her. I wish Sir, my best Respects to your Nephew And am with Sentiments of great Esteem and Respect Your Obedient Humble Servant
