From Benjamin January (unpublished)
Front Street June 26th. 1787
Sir

I feel extremely Sorry that any accident Should have happen’d to those Books, which I have had the honour to bind for your Excellency, but I trust that your goodness will readily excuse me of any Negligence, when I inform you, that it was owing to the Carelesness of a Journeyman, in whom I plac’d too much Confidence; but in Order to make Amends, I will Chearfuly Rebind all of the Books that are Misplac’d, and cannot rest Satisfied till it is done.

I flatter myself, that notwithstanding this Accident, that I will meet with encouragement, from your Excellency, and from the Known goodness of your disposition, there is no Room to doubt, but what Success will attend the Application of One, who begs leave to Subscribe himself, with Sentiments of the greatest Respect, Your Excellency’s Most Obedient, Humble Servant

Benja. January
