From William Smith (unpublished)
Chester in Maryland Septr. 4th. 1786
May it please your Excellency

As I was but a few Days in Town last week, and could not find a convenient opportunity to wait upon You in Person, I take this Method of introducing my 2d. Son Thomas to you, who was bred to Physic with your old Friend Dr. Thos. Bond, and has been for some Years in the West Indies on Account of his Health. He seems to have little Inclination, altho’ he has great abilities, to follow his Profession in a great City, his Choice being rather a Country Life. The Request he has to make, he will explain to your Excellency whether at this Session, or when there will be a Division of Bedford County, is yet uncertain. The Petitions are before a Committee who will soon report. The Town of Huntingdon on Juniala, which is my Property is recommended by all the Petitioners as the only Place for the County Town. The Office I wish for my Son will be of little Value, but may be some Inducement to Him to settle there and take the Charge of my other Affairs in that Neighborhood, where the chief Part of all my Property lies. He is sufficiently qualified and has an Education which will entitle him to that or even a higher Office or Trust in the State, and I have a full Dependence that when it falls in your Power, You will on my Account chearfully support his Application and give him your Voice for the Office of Prothon of the New County to be taken out of Bedford. I shall attend the Meeting of the Corporation for the Relief of the widows &c of our Clergy the 1st. Tuesday in Octr. at Philada. and shall pay my Respects to you in Person upon that Occasion. I am Your most obedient humble Servant

William Smith
