William Caslon to William Temple Franklin (unpublished)
London Decr: 7, 1779:
My Dear Friend

I hope this will find yourself & the good Dr: your Grandfather, in Perfect Health. I had the Honor of hearing from him not long since, & shall soon Answer his Letter, which I beg You will tell him, will be, when I have shipt the 2 line Double Pica, for Amsterdam; I have a Favor to beg of You, & in which if You oblige Me, believe Me, any return I can make, I shall be happy in doing. You know as well as I, that the Pomatum made in England, is by no means so good, as what is Imported from France, & what we buy here, we pay most exorbitontly for: when I was in Paris, I bought a small quantity, & brought it with Me, to England, but it is nearly gone; if you can, without Inconvenience, send Me in a Box, 18 Rolls & 18 Potts, of the best Pomatum, (the Scents: shirtly, Mille Fleure, Rose, Honey, & Marveishalle,) I shall be greatly obliged to You. You are the best Judge, which will be the cheapest way of sending the Box, & as I hope to be favored with future Orders from the Dr: the expence, shall be deducted from the next, or if You will desire any Friend of yours to call upon Me, I will pay to him, whatever the sum may be; if you will send Me in the Box, an Account, of what they come to, I will, if you desire it, pay the Money, to Messrs: Brown & Collinson’s, either way You Please, I will do, I would not give You so much Trouble about so Trifling an Article, as Pomatum, but I think (if the conveyance does not come expensive) I shall save much, by having them sent from Paris, as it is a very Dear Comodity here, I add to that, My being convinced of your Friendship. I shall be happy in hearing from You, as we are (tho’ not Advanced in Years) old Acquaintances & Schoolfellows, there is no Particular News in London, Poloticks, we must not touch upon; God Permiting, I shall soon be a Father, Mrs Caslon desires her Respectfull Compts: to the Dr. & Yourself, & believe Me to be Dear Friend, Your Sincere Friend & well wisher

William Caslon

p.s. I beg you will Present to the Dr: my Compts: with those of My Mother and Brother, I Received his Letter, with the Draft upon Messrs. Brown & Collinson, but it is not Paid, they not having had any Orders from the Dr: to pay it, but they Informed Me, they would write to him about it.
