Jonathan Williams, Jr. to William Temple Franklin (unpublished)
St Germain Wednesday morn.
my dear Billy

I dined yesterday with Mr. Arthur to meet Mr Vernon an English Gentleman of Family & his Brother in Law Mr Dawson. Mr Vernon has lately been through America and has several Letters of Recommendation to the Doctor: he appears to have been much fêté in our Country; he is Brother to the famous Lady Grosvenor of pretty memory, & is himself a very handsome man. I undertook to do the proper Civilities which his Introductions to the Doctor intitle him to & invited him to dine with you next saturday with his Brother Mr Dawson in order to have the pleasure of meeting them myself.—I could not avoid passing the Compliment on Mr Arthur so I have procurd 3 Guests for you.—If I have done wrong, I am sorry, but it will be the last Time I can ever in that way. I knew you would give a dinner to Mr Vernon, I can therefore have erred only in fixing the Day, which I shall blame myself for, if it takes you from any more agreeable Engagement. I shall on saturday fix decisively the Day of our departure, which will not certainly exceed this day Week, this please to say with my kind Compliments to Ms Hewson.—Remember me dutifully & affectionately to the Doctor & believe me ever yours
