To the Chevalier — (unpublished)
[June-July, 1785]

That I have receiv’d his Letter, and one he wrote me formerly on the Subject of Bombs and Bullets said to have been order’d for me by Mr. Feutry in 1777. As I remember nothing of any such Transaction, and Mr. Feutry is a Man of Veracity, I am inclin’d to think M Chevalier is mistaken as to his naming me as the Person who was to pay for those Bombs. But if Mr. Chevalier can now or any any time hereafter produce to me any Note of Mr. Feutry’s Writing expressing that those Things were made for me, I will immediately order Payment. Mr. Feutry has liv’d long in Paris since that Date, and I suppose may be still in or near it, and I wonder that Mr. Ch. should be so long without recovering his Money from the Person who employ’d him.
