Macaulay, Catherine (1731-1791)

Historian.

Published a controversial but widely admired History of England (8 vols., London, 1763-83), as well as several other works on history, politics, philosophy, and education; considered a “republican” writer. Visited Paris, where she met Franklin and other celebrities (1775, 1777), and America (1784-85). May have considered writing a history of the American Revolution.

Daughter of John and Elizabeth (Wanley) Sawbridge of Wye, Kent. Married (1) George Macaulay, a Scottish physician (1760); one daughter. Married (2) William Graham (1778).
