Friend of James Hutton.

Resided in India (1773-83); opposed Warren Hastings’s administration of Indian affairs. Supported the development of a Moravian mission in India and hosted missionaries at his villa near Calcutta. Joined the Moravian Church (c. 1785), married Mary Foster Barham, and settled near Bedford, England.
