Presbyterian minister.
Ordained at the German Church in London (1744). Immigrated to South Carolina. Pastor of the Independent Presbyterian Church in Savannah (1760). Became a spokesman for the Presbyterians, Lutherans, and other dissenting denominations that opposed the Anglican monopoly on conducting marriages and funerals.
Member of the Continental Congress (1775); resigned because he opposed full independence from Britain. Returned to Georgia, where he was imprisoned as a Loyalist, then banished (1777); half his property was confiscated. Returned to Georgia again when royal government was restored in the province (1779). Published several sermons and political pamphlets.
Son of David Zubly of St. Gall, Switzerland. Married Ann Tobler in 1746; two daughters.
