Served in the French army and navy. Captain of guards to the comte de Chartres and subsequently to the Duc d’Orléans. Deputy to the Estates General (1789). Condemned and executed by the Revolutionary tribunal (1793).

Married Stéphanie-Félicité Ducrest de Saint- Aubin (1762); she became a famous memoirist. Later acquired the title of marquis de Sillery.
