Clapham, William (d. 1763)

New England officer experienced in Indian warfare.

Placed in command at Fort Allen upon Franklin’s departure (February 1756). Commissioned colonel of the Pennsylvania forces (March 1756). Commander of Fort Augusta at Shamokin (July 1756). Following difficulties with provincial officials and with some of his officers, he resigned from his post (March 1757). Settled on lands along the Youghiogeny River. In May 1763, he was killed and scalped by Indians.
