English clergyman and philanthropist.
Ordained deacon (1745). Rector of St. Gregory’s and St. Peter’s, both in Sudbury, Suffolk. Offered to donate £1000 (later reduced to £500) to the Bray Associates to buy real estate in America, the income to be used for educating African-American children (1766); the Associates asked Franklin to advise Upcher on the purchase.
Son of Peter Upcher of Sudbury. Educated at St. Catharine’s College, Cambridge (B.A. 1746).
