Appointed Henry Laurens’ secretary (1779). Captured and imprisoned in England with Laurens.

Escaped in February 1781 and traveled to France. Franklin employed him for a period of months while he waited for Laurens’ release (1782).

Prior to working with Laurens, he was a secretary in the office of Charles Thomson (1777), and assistant paymaster for the Board of War (1778).
