Received an M.A. from the University of Jena. Came under the influence of the Moravians and emigrated to America in 1735. Was prominent in organizing Moravian settlements.

Returned to Germany (1762).

Married in 1740 to Eva Maria (Ziegelbauer) Immig, a widow. Married in 1754 to Mary Elizabeth (Jaehne) Miksch, also a widow.
