Greenwood, Joseph

Mapmaker and Indian trader.

Explored and mapped Ohio. Visited London (1752), where he was acquainted with English naturalist Peter Collinson. With Indian agent George Croghan, described bones and skeleton of a “Great Buffalo” (bison) that they had found at a licking place near the Ohio River and supplied information about the “skeletons of six monstrous animals” (probably mastodons) in the same area (1762).
