Charost, Armand-Joseph de Béthune, duc de (d. 1800)

French soldier and social reformer.

Created schools, libraries, hospitals, orphanages, roads, and canals on his estates in Berry; established a rudimentary insurance program and abolished the payment of tithes. Published works on the interior navigation of Berry and the French public education system.

Married (1) Louise-Suzanne-Edmée martel de Fontaine (1760); two sons. Married (2) Henriette-Adélaïde-Joséphine du Bouchet de Sourches de Tourzel (1783).
