Prospered greatly from privateering and military contracts during the Seven Years’ War. Trustee of the College of New Jersey (1748-61). Active Whig; served on several Revolutionary committees. Retired from public affairs due to ill health (1775).
Son of Philip and Catherine (Van Brugh) Livingston of Albany, New York. Brother of Franklin correspondents Philip and William Livingston. Educated at Yale (B.A. 1731). Married (1) Mary Alexander (1739); she was the daughter of James Alexander and the sister of William Alexander, who subsequently married Livingston’s sister Sarah. Married (2) Elizabeth Ricketts.
