Most famous for his 1791 biography of lexicographer Samuel Johnson, Boswell was acquainted with many of the leading literary figures of his day, including Hume, Goldsmith, Voltaire, Rousseau and Franklin.

Born in Scotland. Married Margaret Montgomerie in 1769.
