Prominent citizen of Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.
Quartermaster of the Wyoming Post under his father Col. Zebulon Butler (1778); rose to rank of Acting Deputy Quartermaster General (1779). First sheriff of Luzerne County (1787-89). Member of the Supreme Executive Council of Pennsylvania (1789-90). First postmaster of Wilkes-Barré (1794-1802). Served one term in the Pennsylvania legislature (1802). Held numerous other town, county, and militia offices.
Son of Zebulon and Anne (Lord) Butler of Lyme, Connecticut. Moved to Pennsylvania with his family (1772). Married Mary Peirce (1786); ten children.
